This martial art started as a demonstration sport on September 17th, 1988 at the 24th Seoul Olympics, and this became a bridgehead to spread Taekwondo worldwide. Finally, it became an official medal event at the 2000 games in Sydney. Taekwondo is now an international martial art in 203 countries and includes 80 million practitioners.

The ultimate goal of Taekwondo is to develop the character and personality of an individual through physical, mental and spiritual discipline. This martial art is one-of-a-kind. It is a combative sport which integrates self-defense techniques, exercise, and meditation.


“Tae” means to strike or break with foot;

“Kwon” means to strike or break with first;

“Do” means way, method, or path.

Thus,“taekwondo” may be loosely renslated as the way of the hand and the foot.
